The Paris Photo Platform this year was co-directed by Nicolas Bourriaud, director of École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris and Chantal Pontbriand, curator and art critic.
The Platform was organized around three lines corresponding to the state of thinking and practices that provoke debate in the world of art and photography today:

PHOTOGRAPHY CHALLENGED BY THE WORLD
How is photography changing at a time when the world seems to be paradoxically both growing and shrinking? Has ethnographic photography, based on the idea of the existence of people and places that are “other”, taken with it the idea of documentary photography? A collection of travel shots and exotic film stills, protocols for relationships with residents, a mise-en-scène offsetting what is local and what is global, an archeology of images in various regions of the world, all this and more feed into these questions.

ENCYCLOPEDIC FANTASY
Influential art historian Aby Warburg opened out the discipline at the beginning of the last century to include a new concept of working with images. Today, a number of contemporary artists following this line of thought explore taxonomies and iconologies. This “encyclopedic fantasy” is in line also with the use that artists today make of archives. What is the meaning of this focus on the past and on the historical weight of the image?

PHOTOGRAPHY, PAINTING, LIMITS?
What lies beyond the incestuous ties between photography since its invention and the tradition of painting? How do new technical and sociological developments, and even developments in artistic thought itself, push these ties and these limits ever further? What about the image’s ability to overshadow itself, a process found in a number of artists’ work, pushing dematerialization to its limits to the point of even overturning it?
